Six months after opening in a temporary tented venue, Live! Casino Virginia in Petersburg has become one of the region’s more striking new entertainment stories.

Axios Richmond reported on 31 July that the casino had welcomed more than 500,000 guests from all 50 US states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and Canada during its first six months. The figures were reported by the venue and cover the period from its late-January opening through the end of June.

For a casino still operating from a temporary structure, the scale of attention is notable. Axios said the venue currently has more than 900 slot machines and more than 30 gaming tables—only a portion of what is planned for the permanent development being built next door.

A temporary venue with a permanent plan

Live! Casino Virginia is operated by The Cordish Companies. Its temporary setup was designed to begin serving guests while work continues on the larger permanent casino-resort project.

According to the Axios report, that larger venue is expected to include a hotel and entertainment space, as well as nearly double the current number of slot machines and gaming tables. The permanent casino remains on track to open by the end of next year, the report said.

The contrast between the tented opening and the long-term development is part of what gives this story its appeal. It is not simply a new place to play. It is a visible, phased destination project in a city that became the casino’s home after Richmond voters rejected casino proposals twice.

That local context helps explain why a six-month milestone is worth watching. A casino opening changes more than a gaming map; it can reshape a local entertainment calendar, visitor patterns and public conversation around jobs, taxes and development.

The headline figures

Axios reported that the casino paid 7,400 jackpots totalling US$28 million in its first six months. It also reported US$77.1 million in adjusted gaming revenue through June. Adjusted gaming revenue is the amount a casino retains after winnings are paid, before taxes.

The report further cited Virginia Lottery figures showing US$13.9 million in state and local gaming taxes through June.

These figures should be read as measures of the venue’s early activity, not as a reason to gamble. A jackpot total says something about the scale of payouts at a busy casino, but it does not change the odds of any individual game or make gambling a source of income.

For local observers, the visitor figure may be the more revealing metric. More than half a million guests in six months signals that the temporary venue has quickly become an attraction in its own right, well before the hotel and dedicated entertainment space arrive.

Entertainment, tourism and a measured perspective

Casino-resort developments are built around more than gaming. The planned permanent Live! Casino Virginia venue is expected to add hospitality and entertainment features that can give visitors reasons to make a longer trip, whether they gamble or not.

That is the entertainment angle behind the numbers. A large destination venue can bring together dining, events, hotel stays and gaming in one location. The challenge for operators is to make that experience feel welcoming while keeping responsible-gambling information clear and accessible.

For guests, the same principle applies. Decide in advance whether gambling is part of the visit, set a limit that fits the entertainment budget and treat any spend as the price of leisure—not an investment or a plan to recover money.

Live! Casino Virginia’s first half-year has delivered the kind of local milestone that destination projects look for: sustained attention before the full resort exists. The next chapter will be whether the permanent venue turns that early curiosity into a broader, durable entertainment destination for Petersburg.

21+ to gamble in Virginia. Gambling should be entertainment, not a way to make money. If it stops feeling fun, pause and seek support.
